PFsense legacy install on Firebox X1000

@daddygo oops :P , I might consider using some parts to build a better system, i wanted to use this as it looked like a fun project. at least for what im doing it just going to block unwated traffic to game servers on a 100mb connection the OS and rest of it will not be publicly faceing.
if you have any ideas how to flash its OS/bios id appricae it.

I would steer clear of the X500, X700, X1000 as they have the rubbish realtek nics the newer e-series boxes have broadcom's IIRC

If that's true. You have a "unsupported CPU" with "lousy" Network cards.

there is so much good and cheap stuff (HW for NGFW/pfSense) you can use, look for these

Yes, as others have said, that is 32bit and there is no current (secure) pfSense image that will run on it. And yes even when 2.3.5 was current the Realtek NICs and Pentium 3 era (yes really) CPU in that did not make it a great target. The -e series had Marvell NICs but they too were 32bit so also now obsolete.

There is no BIOS flashing or even configuring required to boot an OS on that. I'm sure it would rin OpenWRT just fine if you wanted a project.

@stephenw10 Lucky the unit had bought had 30 return on it, so sent that and the extras with it back, managed to get a R210 for obviously more but its I know to work those :)
Looking change its CPU to something low power.

On this R210 will be a bit tricky to install pfSense, but not impossible.
(we use R210II for this very reason)

there is only one add-on space (slot) on it (PCIe), so you have to choose between: 2 pcs. eth. interface (LOM) will be or the SATA speed will be only 3GB / s
(MOBO SATA port only 3GB/s or + add-on H200 6GB/s)

This "iron" loves Broadcom-based DELL NICs, they can upgrade to FW
(Broadcom BCM5709)

There are many compatibility problems with other manufacturers' NICs.

Seems like a pretty easy choice, pfSense doesn't really need drive speed.

just an update I guess.
Have installed PFsense to a PCI riser -64gb Kingston M.2 SSD
Removed the horrible raid card and 160gb SAS disks. it was a heck of a job updating its firmware, but its fairly quiet with BMC and bios update and got rid of ther ebay smell from it.
Seem's to be around 40w being on so its already less then the firebox just being on. this R210 came with a X3430, but ill look at getting a L chip to lower the number abit.
Im pleased I managed to get 24 port WS-2950-24 from work.
