Hi PF-Sense Community, is there a idea to add ptpd2 as a service to PF-Sense ?

Hi,
Do you operate DANTE networks or AES67?
https://www.audinate.com/or
packet-based mobile backhaul ?
otherwise, this is not usually done in the router, but in the switching level in the L2 network:
https://www.masterclock.com/products/master-clocks/gmr5000BTW:
new requests can be executed this way:
https://docs.netgate.com/pfsense/en/latest/development/feature-requests.html -
^ yeah having a hard time coming up with a use case where you would run this on pfsense?
-
There are no immediate plans but there is a feature request open:
https://redmine.pfsense.org/issues/6555You should add comments there if you have a pressing use case.

@johnpoz i think not, but i like to have a accurate sync between all my boxes....

@daddygo is it not true that on a LAN segment normaly can be a L2 Network?
so why not ptp there?

I have been dealing with PTPv1 or v2 (IEEE 1588) for 10 years as it is very important on audio networks but especially unnecessary in a SOHO environment
https://dev.audinate.com/GA/dante-controller/userguide/webhelp/content/clock_synchronization.htm
okay, do what you want if you need it on your system...
your basic problem will be that none of the MOBOs contain a VCXO that would hold this exact clock, so GPS synchronization remains only...
https://www.audinate.com/learning/faqs/how-is-the-master-clock-for-the-dante-network-generated
or
HW level:
https://www.mellanox.com/files/doc-2020/ieee-1588-precision-time-protocol-design-guide.pdfPS:
and once again, PTP transmission is done at the L2 level for all devices to accessL2 level:
at the backhaul or fabric level, - "router(s) / NGFW(s)" are affected at this level only
certainly,........ the MOBOs known today have such an accurate clock, so they need NTP(???, hmm), so they are unusable at the PTP level!
+++edit:
and as we know pfSense runs on such++++edit2:
I will no longer even mention that the cost of a master clock is a minimum of $ 2,500 to $ 3,500, we got it at this price and just a basic type -
@daddygo but i think a lot of 2nd hand NICs can do a great job in handle ptp with Hardwaretimestamp, on the PF-Sense SW it's allowed to add GPS "or/and" PPS support, this brings me to the conclusion that we're able to put this possibility then with ptp out to some other Hosts in the L2 Network.
So for me it's then the conclusion that we like to have ptpd2 on the SW... -

No problem, but I'll tell you "you cut the ax into a big tree"
