Probably simple PPPoE question
-
Hi all,
I have been running a pfsense firewall for a couple of years all great.
We have however just changed from bt business to talktalk business and cannot get the wan connected anymore.
Setup is -
New g.fast modem all lights correct.Plug in talktalk router via ethernet from modem wan port to router wan port and all is good. So we know the modem is working and the service is live.
Now unplug talktalk router and plug in pfsense box (via ethernet into wan port)
Update interface settings from bt credentials to talktalk credentials.
Reboot modem and pfsense. No WAN connection.
I have checked the username and password. And also checked with talktalk the connection type (pppoe)
So the only difference from bt to talktalk is that talktalk have given us a static ip, although I can't seem to enter this into the pppoe set up.
Can anybody help me get this reconnected?
Thanks

@dgs2001
did you set VLAN ID 101 for the pppoe connection ?
what does the log say? -
What g.fast modem are you using? I would expect the VLAN to be set in the modem.
Are you sure they are using PPPoE directly with a static IP? Can you check the Talktalk router settings?

@stephenw10 Hi Its the Talktalk supplied modem which openreach bought and plugged in, so i have no access to the settings for this.
Talktalk have told me to use PPPoE however I dont think the customer service person i spoke with really had a clue what I was on about.
They just keep saying they don't support third party kit etc.Looking at the talktalk router the connection is shown as PPP with just the username and password visible. There are no other settings shown.
I did initially try a PPP connection type in pfsense but came unstuck on phone number (its not a 3G/4G connection) and modem port. for phone number i used null but modem port is a drop down.
I was thinking it could be something simple to do with the static IP, but cant see where that would go in pfsense within the PPPoE set up.

To be fair I dont want to disturb the modem too much as the DLM will have a hissy fit.
We are right on the end of the g.fast acceptable copper length from the cab at 298meteres and the SNR is not ideal.

I'm in that same situation. I get ~140Mbps, no point paying for the higher speed.
Can you find out what the actual modem is? Is it a Huawei MT992? That's the one everyone wants. I have that but had to pay an exorbitant price! But I know that works with BT at least.
g.fast doesn't use DLM like old school dsl, it nowhere near as important to keep the line up at all times. But disconnecting the internal port doesn't affect that anyway.

@stephenw10 the modem is a ZT Link MT992 which I understand is the replacement for the Huawei. Its probably the exact same thing but badged from an alternate Chinese supplier still allowed to supply the UK!
I'm back in the office tomorrow and will email the talktalk account manager who will hopefully be a little more helpful than "its third party kit, we don't support third party kit"
The telephone operative couldn't or wouldn't even confirm whether the MTU should be set at 1500
Thanks Duncan

Yeah the ZT Link is identical AFAIK. Neither has any sort of user accessible interface so you can't make any changes or see line stats etc. Which is disapointing.
But you don't need to set any sort of VLAN in pfSense, it does the tagging already.
For BTs domestic connection it uses PPPoE and I just hooked it up and it worked. Talktalk have done odd things in the past but they can't be doing anything that unusual. Is it a single static IP you have or a /29? Or something else?
Someone else has probably done this before.

It is just a single static IP, so I think it should just connect.
This morning I will spin up a fresh virtual pfsense just to make sure its not somehow corrupted.
Thanks
