pfSense Plus and pfSense CE: Dev Insights and Direction

@dennis_s Thanks for clearing the confusion up for me.
One more question what is the line between home/lab and business? If I want to add a static IP on my WAN and mess around with port forwards is that considered "Business use" Or does that part refer to if I'm using your product in or installing it for other companies/freelance consulting?
That may not make sense but I don't understand what business use means to be honest.

It's probably fair to say that even Netgate doesn't have perfectly clear vision of how things will look 6 months or a year down the road. There are new people involved (see the blog posts) and things are changing.
I think it's entirely unfair to declare the changes a disaster for the community and the related open source projects beforehand. Time will tell and what will be will be. Positive engagement from the community can only help. Negative engagement often ends up becoming a self fulfilling prophecy.

@dennis_s Where can you download pfSense Plus? Or is it not available for non-netgate hardware as I do have a watchguard XTM 5 series firewall with pfSense CE currently intsalled. Would love to upgrade to Plus at home. Just can not find where to download it.

@stacyann33 Per the blog, "we also plan to make pfSense Plus available to work on non-Netgate hardware in late 2021"
-
As I understand pfsense Plus will be available for custom hardware summer 2021. Do you have any pricing informations? I don't mind paying a one time fee if it's not too expensive (maybe 30-50โฌ). Any kind of subscription with monthly pay is a NoGo for me and I'll leave Pfsense

To make things clear. I'm taking about pfsense for home use. I'd love to have fast updates and new features.
-
@thisisme It will be free as in beer for home use.

Or you can just stay on pfSense (non-Plus...pfSense CE I guess we should start calling it).

@jwj Very good news. I really like pfsense and getting the new plus version for free is lovely. Already worried about the migration work to another product, but now I'm looking forward for the new release.

Any news on the API?

I'm curious as to why Go was chosen for the UI? I have zero interest in starting a language war, no Rust vs Go nonsense. I'm also not questioning the appropriateness of Go.
I'm interested in what language attributes made it attractive or was it simply you already have the people and you can get to work immediately?
I'm speaking from experience where I have had to pick a tool set for service development (purely back-end) but skipped over obvious choices because of a lack of people ready to go. I've personally never done full stack work in any serious way, and have zero interest in such things. Front end development is an unpleasentness I'm happy to leave to others. :)

Just wondering about the timeline and lack of comms on releasing PFSense Plus for individuals to load on their own hardware. It's been quiet for a few months.
-
@gauthig It is taking a little longer than initially planned, but our goal is still to have it available this year.
-
@dennis_s any update on this? Am really curious to see how much different pfsense plus is for my home lab. Hoping it offers some improvement with my watchguard xtm550.
-
Any update on this?

@truckin AFAIR from that Reddit thread:
https://www.reddit.com/r/PFSENSE/comments/q1eix5/pfsense_plus_september_release/
the September release got pulled in favor of more development time and moved/merged to the 22.01 release.
Don't know why Reddit gets info on this and I don't see big posts in the forum but yeah.
-
Well, it's done, when it's done.
This works over years for pfSense ;) -
Thank you for the update.
