Manually mirror one SG-1100 to a 2nd
-
Hello all,
Unfortunately the latest update failed on my SG-1100 (it still handles all network functions correctly, however the GUI fails to start. This has been verified via the console). Another thread on that.
I have the recovery image and am all prepped to perform the recovery procedure (including having copied the most recent config backup to the USB stick) but I realized that if this should fail, I'm dead in the water. Because I rely on a rock-solid internet connection for work, that would put me in a real bind.
So, I have ordered another SG-1100. When it arrives, I'll install it in place of the damaged but functional original one. Once I know everything is good using the new one, I'll do the recovery process on the original device.
I want to have a spare device, already configured properly (mine is simple, the only thing besides the admin password change is that I have an interface in place to allow the OPT port access to the WAN. My work PC is plugged into the OPT port, to keep it separated from the rest of my network).
As Netgate releases updates, I would update whichever device happens to be "in-service" at that time. And leave the spare device as-is (not updated).
The next time an update is published, then I'd switch SG-1100's putting the most-recently- updated one on the shelf, and operate using what was the spare. I'd then do the update on it.
I think this is be most prudent way for me to proceed in the future.
Any flaws in my plan? I assume that I can make a config backup on one device and restore it to the other device, or are the backups tied to the device serial #??
Thanks for considering!
