I first tried upgrading from 2.4.5-RELEASE-p1 and then a clean install from the 2.5.0 memstick image and the results were the same both times. My MBT-4220 hangs during reboot. The 2.5.0 kernel loads and starts, but then hangs almost right away. See details in the attached console log. I've dropped back to the 2.4.5 release until this issue can get sorted out. Any ideas as to the problem would be most appreciated.

@trickyt Use legacy GPT instead of UEFI on windows based hardware.

@nollipfsense UEFI is what came on the MBT-4220 appliance, which I purchased directly from the Netgate store. I have not modified the firmware and I'm sure this is not the issue.

Just to the clear, the image I tried using for the new install is pfSense-CE-memstick-2.5.0-RELEASE-amd64.img that I got from here: https://www.pfsense.org/download/. It's the one with the VGA console as recommended by Netgate.

@trickyt Okay, you have the right installer ... do you have the pfSense on the USB key or can you get one, even though Netgate claimed it didn't plan on offering it.

You might need to contact support at minnowboard.org website.
Can you get into the Bios? I don't know what else to say other than what I already said as I had installed a clean pfSense 2.5 on a friend's Lenovo instead of upgrading from version 2.4.5, and I had the same issue until I switched from UEFI mode to legacy mode.

@nollipfsense Yes, I have the USB key that you show. It was provided with my MBT-4220 and is how I recovered to version 2.4.4. The recovery was straight forward: you just insert the blue "credit card" key and boot to the installer contained on that key. That all worked fine using the UEFI.

With respect to 2.5.0, my thinking is that Netgate just omitted something that is specific to the MBT-4220. I'm not sure what that would be, but it would be good to hear from them that they've tested 2.5.0 on the MBT-4220. After all, they sold this appliance on the Netgate store. (At the time, the SG-1000 had been discontinued and, at least for a few months, the MBT-4220 was sold as a replacement until the SG-1100 came out.)

Nothing else to add - sorry. I don't have a 4220 to test with... I have an old 2440, but it way behind and at a remote location.. And just won't be updated until after people are back in the office.

For that many would have to have lot of just taped shows - while I have some of those.. Most of my "official" collection is just stuff that has been released.. I have pretty much everything that has been released..

Yeah been a long time DH ;) And I got a late start in life.. I didn't get into dead until Navy and couple of guys on the ship really got me into them.. Couldn't get to a show until got out in 89.. Might have even been 90.. But got into them 86 some time.. If any regrets, that I missed many a years of shows I could of been going to.. Vs seeing the likes of Ozzy and ZZ top, Cars, Journey in my HS years..

edit: Yeah Shows - they that is very possible to do - great collection I am sure!!

@trickyt I know this is a couple of months later.

I tried to upgrade my MBT-4220 via the WebUI from 2.4.x to 2.5.latest and I sat there for 10 minutes after the reboot waiting for a ping.

I took the router out of my closet (removed power naturally) hooked it up to HDMI and when it came up, it didn't come up into pfSense, it came up into generic FreeBSD (what the heck?).

Luckily I backed it up prior to the upgrade. So I downloaded the appropriate USB stick installer and wiped it out and installed 2.5.x clean and restored the settings.

@bplein I'm still running the latest 2.4.5 release and haven't tried to upgrade to 2.5.1. Sounds like I should skip the upgrade and just do a clean install from a USB drive instead.

Are you running ZFS? I've often wondered if this is why I ran into trouble in my original attempt at upgrading to 2.5.0 back in early March. I know there was a missing line in a config file that was needed for ZFS, but adding that did not help my situation.

Thanks for posting to this old thread. Now I know at least one other MBT-4220 owner has gotten 2.5.1 to run.

@trickyt I am not running ZFS. There is a specific installer for this class of equipment, you will want to follow the instructions and links from here: https://docs.netgate.com/platforms/minnowboard/pfsense-dual-ethernet.html

Choose the USB image and VGA and AMD64 architecture.

I would back it up and try to upgrade, and only wipe it if necessary. But that's just me.

OK, closing out this thread and linking it to another. The root cause of the problem I reported is that on the MBT board, the ZFS module combined with the i915 HDMI module exhausts the available EFI staging area. I don't fully understand the details, but thanks to help from @stephenw10 the solution is relatively simple: just reinstall pfSense and use UFS for the file system rather than ZFS. I have confirmed this works with CE 2.5.1.

If you want to see additional details, this thread has more information.

So glad that this issue can finally be put to bed!
