Recovering To A Different Box and Version?
-
Hello,
Hopefully my query is a simple one.
Let' assume I have an x86 box that is made by Brand A and is in production and I have another box that is spare, not connected and sat on the shelf that is made by Brand B which is my emergency spare in case Brand A has major fail.
I initially install pfsense 2.4 on both and then leave the Brand B. Brand A continues to get pfsense upgrades etc to 2.5. I continue to make backups 1 with and 1 without packages.
Brand A fails badly and I need to bring in Brand B. But Brand B is currently installed with 2.4 whereas my backups are for 2.5.
If I restore Brand A 2.5 backups to Brand B that has 2.4 would it work?
I know I can edit the backup file beforehand to change/correct the nic assignments. But would the Brand B box either pull down the pfsense updates to upgrade itself to 2.5 during the restore as it would do with packages or would it fail horribly in some way?
Thanks and cheers

No, this will not work.
You can restore an older configuration to a newer base but not vice versa.
You can restore an older 2.4.x backup file or you can upgrade the cold spare to match what the active firewall is running.
