SG-5100 bricked after upgrade to 21.02-P1 and webGUI issues
-
Yesterday I decided to upgrade my SG-5100 to the latest firmware, 21.02-P1 through the webGUI. Luckily I assured that there was a recent config backup available, as it turned out I needed it. What happened:
The upgrade was reported successful, and the SG-5100 rebooted. The page was counting down for a refresh in I think 150 seconds or so. But after that, it did not work and it kept retrying a new countdown over and over again. Powercycling the SG-5100 made the main LAN work, but the VLANS did not work properly. A new power cycle effectively bricked the SG-5100 and it completely stopped working.
I then connected to the serial port to investigate what was happening. In the terminal window I saw an endless row of dots ( . ) being outputted. After some deep diving what I found was that my /cf/config.xml had size 0. I put back the latest config from /cf/backup and rebooted. That worked perfectly. However... the webGUI did not come back up. It did not respond, both on http and https (which I have configured).
After contacting Netgate support I got in touch with Danilo who advised me the following:
Please try selecting options 11) Restart webConfigurator, then 16) Restart PHP-FPM from the console menu.
This immediately fixed my access to the webGUI and I am a happy camper once again.
Wanted to share this with the community, should you suffer from the same issue.

Be patient during upgrades. We don't have any 5100s in service but generally I wait 10 or even 15 minutes on lower end models before worrying. It just takes a long time I suspect depending a lot on the write speed of the storage.

Yes, be patient!!I successfully upgraded my SG-5100 last weekend. I was getting nervous watching the count-down timer continuing to reset over and over... I finally walked away from the computer to give it some time and I got a text about 10 minutes later from the 5100 saying 'Bootup complete' (notification emails enabled).

Reviewing my text messages, here is the timeline:
16:07:47 System is going to be upgraded. Rebooting
16:15:36 Bootup Complete -
@azdeltawye I really wish Netgate would change the default timer from 90 seconds to like 10 minutes or something more reasonable. :)
(90 seconds plus twenty 30 second extra periods is worrisome. 10 minutes and done early is nice)

@teamits Agree.
