@stephenw10 Yeah, that's my thought also. Pain. Will need to connect and configure one of my rack mount switches and string a cable to my desktop to run pcap. I'm not highly talented at reading captures either. Fun! Practice makes perfect.

Can't someone just give me all the answers??? Lol!

You can do what I did and configure a cheap managed switch as a data tap. I keep it in my computer bag, so it's always handy. It may be possible to use Packet Capture, but that can be more difficult for this sort of thing. I normally use Wireshark to monitor the traffic.

        I haven't lost my mind. It's around here...somewhere...

You might just see it on the WAN just by pcapping there and it's easy so I'd try that first. 😉

@jknott Thanks for linking your article. All I've got is a 24-port HP 2530, but it'll do. More power and cables and hassle than anything else. I suppose I could configure three unused ports on my 2930F main switch. Might be easier than dragging out the HP. I'll just need to modify your instructions a bit so as not to disrupt everything.

First order of business is getting Race out to get their router working. It worked for a day, then quit! Then I'll have something to monitor. Hope I can find the skills to accomplish my goal. Race charges $10/mo for the "mandatory" router for IPTV service. I don't know how they will feel if I try to say I don't need it.

@stephenw10 Are you saying just plug the WAN port into an unused pfSense LAN interface and monitor that? I like it. Should see any DHCP requests on any alternate VLAN, right?

No, you have to monitor between pfsense and the modem. As I mentioned, Packet Capture might be suitable for that, but if you use a managed switch and mirroring, it would go between pfsense and the modem.

Yeah, you have everything going through pfSense already as I understand it so assuming the modem is just forwarding everything a pcap on WAN would show any tagged traffic that is arriving.
That's assuming your WAN is not using a VLAN now? If it is you would need to assign the parent interface and pcap on that.

If you create a new column in Wireshark and add the field vlan.id you'll be able to see the vlan ID otherwise look in the data.
