Every time I try to update pfSense on my XG-7100, the update freezes and I have to reboot it and retry. Today, I just let it run and it eventually failed. The issues occurred when trying to download the openvpn export client. The updater says “permissions denied.”

This firewall has done something similar when updating to 21.01p1, 21.02, and now 21.05. I can’t confirm it was always the openvpn client export that it failed to download, but I know it’s always frozen up during the update.

Do you have any logged errors we can review?

There should be an upgrade log stored in /conf.

If you upgrade from the command line using the menu option there you will get a lot more diagnostic info to troubleshoot with if it does fail.

@stephenw10 Sorry, I've been out of the office. I've just looked and unfortunately there's nothing in those logs at this time. After I had this error, I removed the package and tried again and it was successful. So I don't have the logs from when it failed anymore. I tried to find them but I was looking in /var/log earlier so I couldn't find them.

Mmm, you have logs in /conf for package installs and the last firmware upgrade as well the last firmware check.

Hard to say what the issue might be without those or the console output from the failure.

I'll definitely have to keep this in mind for next time. In the meantime, I just saw a post in the official Facebook group of another bloke who had the same issue with the same package.

Did he collect any logs that might be more useful?

It's a very generic error, I would expect to apply to almost any package with the same backend issues existing.
