[SOLVED] Why Select VLANs at Initialization Time?

  • So, I’ve set up some VLANs on the LAN side of my PFSense configuration to isolate Private Lan, Guest LAN, FIOS Set Top Box LAN, etc. Using an online tutorial I found and help from this board it was relatively straight forward.

My question is, what is the VLAN setup option when you install and run PFSense for the very first time about? I selected ‘No’, proceeded with the initialization, then set up the above VLANs through the GUI. What happens if you select ‘Yes’ during initialization? Does it provide any other capabilities?

    Thanks.

  • To cut a long story short, it allows you to setup a single NIC (with VLANs) system.

I do miss the days when they allow you to setup LAGG interfaces from the console though.

it provides you a way to setup the vlans before you get to the gui.. and during setup.  It provides no "extra" features if that is what your asking.

Say the way your network is setup you would need vlan to be able to get to pfsense, would be bad if you could not set them up until you could get to the gui, since you need vlan info to get to the gui, etc.
