I notice a PPPoe section in pfsense. Is it possible to use one of the ports on the 2440 as a port to connect the phone line for DSL?

an ethernet port is not a phone-line jack / it could damage your motherboard. (phonelines in belgium run between 48Vdc for analog & 96Vdc for isdn)

you could bridge your modem & let pfSense handle the PPPoE (the oE stands for 'over ethernet')

Use a cheap dumb modem like Vigor120 that I use and do its job flawlessly.

Some (most? all?) vendor provided DSL routers are capable of being switched into bridge mode. Google your router make and model and "bridge mode"
