Hardware suggestion for pfSense build
-
I'm new to pfSense and I wanted to know what CPU to get since I got my server almost completely built.
I have a 100/20 connection using PPPoE.
I have around 40-50 LAN clients.
I don't plan on using VLANs.
I plan on using VPN but lightly(1-2 simultaneous clients, max 20Mbps throughput ea.)
I have an ASUS P9D-I motherboard with 4GB ECC RAM in dual channel(2x2GB), RAID 1 120GB SSDs from SanDisk, an Intel PRO/1000 PT Dual Port Gigabit NIC card(1LAN to a 52 port switch switch, 1WAN to fiber modem).
What CPU do you suggest? I can use either a Core i3 with ECC support, or a Xeon E3-12xxv3.
I'm totally new to pfSense, so suggestions are welcome! -
Celeron G18xxT (T is low power series) or Pentium G3xxT will do the job.
And use squid proxy server to save more bandwidth. -

Intel G3260T dual core CPU @3,0GHz ~60 €
firewall, VPN, pfBlockerNG -
Intel Xeon E3-1240v3 4 core CPU ~ 150 € (refurbished)
all you want and need
I would try out to get my hands on an intel Xeon E3 CPU instead of the Intel Core i3, i5 or i7 related
to the power saving option and usage of the ECC RAM, if this CPU will be supported under that mainboard. -
