SQUID performance

  • Someone can point me, please.

Here my Media Service Times :

Median Service Times (seconds)  5 min    60 min:
            HTTP Requests (All):  14.89826 14.89826
            Cache Misses:        14.89826 14.89826
            Cache Hits:            0.00000  0.00000
            Near Hits:            0.00000  0.00000
            Not-Modified Replies:  0.00000  0.00000
            DNS Lookups:          0.00394  0.00394
            ICP Queries:          0.00000  0.00000

The SQUID is very slow.Someone can poit me to resolve the problem ?

  • Your cache miss times are horrible.  Are you using a massive cache on a really slow disk?  It's taking a lot of time to confirm that the requested object isn't in the cache.

  • I get

Median Service Times (seconds)  5 min    60 min:
    	HTTP Requests (All):   0.01387  0.14252
    	Cache Misses:          0.00194  0.49576
    	Cache Hits:            0.00000  0.01745
    	Near Hits:             0.00000  0.02317
    	Not-Modified Replies:  0.00975  0.01035
    	DNS Lookups:           0.04639  0.22276
    	ICP Queries:           0.00000  0.00000

  • I loaded the default config for antivirus / squidguard then the performance are normal.

    I don't know why.

  • IMO, antivirus on the firewall is a waste of resources.  It slows everything down, and you can get much better AV solutions that run on the client.

  • Would someone mind posting how/where you are getting these Media Service Times from?

    Thanks

  • Login from console.  Run this command:

    squidclient -h 10.10.0.1 -p 3128 mgr:info

Replace 10.10.0.1 with the IP address of your pfSense LAN.  If you get an access error then you need to add your LAN IP & localhost to squid's External Cache Managers config under Local Cache - Squid Cache General Settings like this:

    127.0.0.1;Your.squid.IP.address

Like I said earlier, if you have a large cache structure that is mostly full on a slower hard disk then you will have elevated Cache Miss times.  The longer it takes to search the cache before declaring a MISS, the worse your numbers will be.
