We have a box with PfSense v2.2.6 loaded on it behind a router that connects to the Internet. Can we take the router away and just use the PfSense as a L3 device? The literature seems to indicate that we can but it does not give any hints on how to configure it. Any help would be appreciated!

Configure what?  So you don't want it to firewall or nat, just route?  Then turn off firewall or just make any any rules, disable nat.  There you go just routing..
