I have had problems starting squid on my pfSense 1.2 box.

After searching the forums I have fixed various issues by:

      • uninstalling the package, manually cleaning the warnings, and reinstalling
      • manually changing owner:group of /var/squid/cache
      • manually changing owner:group of /usr/local/etc/squid
      • manually running "squid -z"
      • manually removing two lines quick_abort_min and quick_abort_max from /usr/local/etc/squid/squid.conf
      • manually adding two lines quick_abort_min and quick_abort_max with the squid default of 16 KB

Now it still wont start but the symptom is:

      • /var/log/system.log reports started child process <some pid="">- /var/squid/log/cache.log reports started process <some other="" pid="">and Ready to receive requests.
      • BUT a "ps ax" shows that none of those <pid>s are active…

      Argh!</pid></some></some>

Had the same problem and lost several hours, but finally found a "fix".

Going to Proxy server > Traffic management and clicking on "Save" does the trick.
After that I am able to start and use squid.

        Hope this helps.

Yes and check the "Allow users on interface" option.

Thanks romany. That has done the trick. For good measure I have gone thru every proxy server settings page and pressed save.
            Relief!!1!one!  :D
