Which hardware for my network layout?

  • I'm looking at the Qotom Q190G4 (4 LAN ports) or ZOTAC CI323 (2 LAN Ports) right now. I'm on Comcast 50/10.

My current network is Motorola Cable Modem –->Netgear Nighthawk R7000 ----> Dell PowerConnect 2724 Managed Switch.

Should I get the Qotom and run one LAN port to the R7000 (AP mode) and another port to the Switch? Or just get the Zotac CI323 and one the single LAN port to the switch and then run the R7000 (AP) off the switch?

Is there a reason or advantage to either one, or does it not matter?

I'm also open to suggestions of other hardware.

  • LAYER 8 Netgate

If you want the Wi-Fi on the same network as the LAN, just connect the AP to the switch.

If you want the AP on a separate subnet, it doesn't really matter.

    Nevermind. Use the switch.

  • Thanks for the advice! It's appreciated.

So the Zotac should be good to go? I know they make some Qotom 2 LAN port units as well. Or if anyone else has a suggestion.

I believe the Zotac should be fine.
Mine is a small home network with three smart TVs (used mainly for Netflix), three computers and a dozen wi-fi devices. I have a fiber connection 100/100.
I bought a miniPC with the same CPU of the zotac CI323 and two Nics. I'm really satisfied, it's capable to run snort, pfBlocker and a couple of OpenVpn clients smooth as silk.
