Questions - looking to buy sg1000 but

  • Hi,

I currently have a time capsule after my isp modem, then all devices are wifi.

I wanted to test the pfsense fw with sg1000 but I had several questions to see if it would do what I want.

1- will I still be able to use time machine to the tc?
2- does pfsense provide a siem like part?
3- can we use pfsense to block ads? By ip or hostname?

    Thanks!

  • 1.  Yes.
    2.  What is a 'siem like part'???
    3.  Yes, via squid+squidguard or pfBlockerNG.

  • If you don't know what it is, then pfSense doesn't provide it. :)

  • Thanks!

Well if it had logs of exactly where all machines on the network are talking to. Instead of having a SIEM or watching wireshark… :)

I just don't want something overkill for home. I simply want to upgrade the security and be able to manage open ports and block IP's or hostname on my own or use already created lists.

I want to know what knocks on the door and try to enter and what does out and block if necessary.

I was going to go with an Asus AC3100 but I came across pfsense but doesn't have a spare machine to test on prior to the purchase of the sg1000.

    Thanks for all the comments.

The usual disclaimers apply about USB, and Wi-Fi in general, but it's actually quite easy:

I have that running as an access point with a couple infrequently-used old phones as clients, works fine.

  • Hello jimp,

I noticed that your sg 1000 has a micro SD card installed on it. I can't seem to install the firmware on an micro SD card using the recovery firmware provided on the members log-in page. The  firmware recovery only erases and reinstalls on the emmc. Are you booting from the SD card?

I emailed pfsense and they said it was not yet possible to install on the micro SD card.

I was wondering if you were able to install on the micro SD.

Would you kindly teach us how to do it? if indeed possible…

Thanks very much for you time and assistance
