Is it possible to have the following config:?

WAN LINK (Modem, or whatever?!) - STATUS: DOWN
             |
             |
             |
      --------------------------------------                         -------------------------
      |                                    |                        |                        |
      |   pfsense router/firewall          | ------------------------|   LAN machine           |  <- requests google.com > gets a page saying that the Internet connection
      |                                    |                        |                        |       is currently down
      --------------------------------------                         --------------------------

      And then this:

WAN LINK (Modem, or whatever?!) - STATUS: UP
             |
             |
             |
      --------------------------------------                         -------------------------
      |                                    |                        |                        |
      |   pfsense router/firewall          | ------------------------|   LAN machine           |  <- requests google.com > gets google.com
      |                                    |                        |                        |
      --------------------------------------                         --------------------------

No way that I can think of to do this without hacking up something. you would need something like bringing up the captive portal with that information when wan is down. not doable with a stock pfsense yet.

OK, I'm looking very much forward to see if that function comes into pfSense  ;) :D

Thanks for a very great firewall OS
