^ Worked for the most part, did not prompt me for the model of SG I had:

          Basic steps:

          • backup the current config
          • Burn the lastest downloadable ADI image to a USB drive (used WinImage)
          • Plugged the USB into the SG box.
          • Connected a laptop with a USB-MicroSerial
          • Opened PuTTY and set for COM3 @115200
          • Logged into the SG box, Shell and reboot
          • System reboot and came up through the USB drive
          • Selected use current settings on the display, font, keyboard
          • Selected Easy Install
          • Selected Standard Image
          • Let the scripts do all the installing
          • Reboot (removed the USB drive)
          • Booted up, default config for the "LAN" of 192.168.1.1, set the laptop up for 192.168.1.5
          • Brought up the web interface, skipped the autosetup steps
          • Went to Diagnostics menu -> Backup and Restore
          • Restored the config file from the backup
          • Reboot and was back up.

Total process takes about 10 minutes.  My re-installation was a bit longer because the box labeled "WAN" port is idg1 and labeled "LAN" port is idg0.  Plugged into the "LAN" port and could not connect to the IP assigned because it was bond to the idg0.  After a few test, plugged into the "WAN" port and the 192.168.1.1 came up.  Minor futzing around but worked to get the configs loaded up.  My config corrects the idg0 and idg1, so the WAN port is the WAN connection and the LAN port is the LAN connection.

But there is what worked for me in a short version!

Then you were probably installing CE instead of the factory version available at portal.pfsense.org.

installing factory version and selecting the correct device automatically does all those interface assignments.

Don't have a portal account to be able to log in to do that.

Assumed you did when you referenced an SG-8860.

For CE installation you should follow this:

                https://doc.pfsense.org/index.php/Installing_pfSense

The hardware docs are available here showing what interface is what, etc:

Was able to buy the SG-8860 used, only 6 months old.  Plus purchased and awaiting the delivery of a 1000, so should be able to get portal access with that when it arrives.  Also looking at other units to go into our production to replace the Cisco RV042 routers.

You can also see install guides for the Netgate version of these products, which is a bit more up-to-date than the Wiki and uses CE in its examples: http://netgate.com/docs/rcc-ve-8860/pfsense.html
