Blob free 1/10gigabit PCI-e SFP nic with SR-IOV?

  • I would like to buy a blob free 1/10Gbps SR-IOV capable PCI-e nic and I was wondering what would be a good option that has low cost server pulls, multi port preferred.

I would also like a blob free sr-iov 1gbps quad or six port pci-e sfp nic.

Preferably multi port with flexible partitioning (the older gen nics required you to assign two ports or virtual functions at once)

  • From the pfSense shop are two cards on the sale;
    Chelsio T520-CR
For usage at the WAN part of pfSense to fully unload NAT and other things
    Chelsio T-520-SO-CR
For usage at the LAN part of pfSense to fully unload functions such VLANs and other

Alternatively to that you might be have a look at this one here from HotLava systems, they
are selling self made multi-port NICs based on Intel chips. For each NIC will be a datasheet
that informs about the OS compatibility. HotLava

  • Uhh thanks but I am looking for cheap server pulls not $800 cards or ones that are so expensive they don't even post the price despite being nothing special, no offense dude but do you have a financial interest in hotlava?

Blob free is way different than simply being compatible with linux or whatever, it means the linux/bsd drivers are entirely open source with no mystery binary blob firmware modules required for full functionality.

Chelsio is a bad company anyway they outsource not only their manufacturing but their engineering as well, I refuse to support companies like that - we're all going to be out of work and on welfare for the rest of our lives if we don't stick up for ourselves.

    • Then you should be looking for the FreeBSD hardware support list which ones is supported also well
then under the pfSense version what is based on FreeBSD.
    • You where asking for server adapters with one, two, four or more LAN ports and HotLava is
only using Intel Chips and the most of this cards are supported since FreeBSD 7.2 with a fine driver!!!
    • There are many different cards out to offload many tasks from the pfSense machine and so the price
range is also many different each from another pending on their given features and options.

Then perhaps you may need a Intel based single or dual PCIe server adapter nothing special, but please
look at first on the FreeBSD hardware support list that matches also the base of your pfSense installation.

Chelsio is at the time the best driver supported card with 10 GBit/s ports for pfSense as I am informed!
Here is acomplete list form Intel Server adapters or server grade NIC that supports SR-IOV.
_Which Intel® Ethernet Adapters and Controllers support SR-IOV?
•Intel® Ethernet Converged Network Adapter X710 Series  ◦Intel® Ethernet Converged Network Adapter X710-DA2
◦Intel® Ethernet Converged Network Adapter X710-DA4

•Intel® Ethernet Converged Network Adapter XL710 Series  ◦Intel® Ethernet Converged Network Adapter XL710-QDA2
◦Intel® Ethernet Converged Network Adapter XL710-QDA1

    •Intel® Ethernet Controller X540 Family ◦Intel® Ethernet Controller X540-AT1
    ◦Intel® Ethernet Controller X540-AT2

•Intel® Ethernet Converged Network Adapter X540 Family ◦Intel® Ethernet Converged Network Adapter X540-T1

And here is the FreeBSD support list
I guess it should be something likes the Intel 520, 540, 710 Chelsio T-520, T-540 that you will need.

  • You clearly are not actually reading my posts, blob free and simply being compatible with linux or bsd are two different things.
Simply having linux/bsd drivers is NOT GOOD ENOUGH.

If you do not understand a topic, do not comment on it.

And again NO, I do NOT want to support a company that supports putting me and my friends out of work like intel, chelsio, etc.

Buying used server pulls is not supporting them although I still do not want a chelsio card, I do not trust a bunch of outsourcing shop idiots to make something that doesn't have massive security holes. (there are plenty of smart indians, I know a few myself - but they don't work for pennies at an outsourcing shop)
