Running 2.3.1-RELEASE-p5 on a Netgate SG-4860 (Gold enabled), it looks like I have exactly this problem.

If I try to "Update from console", I get:```

      Updating repositories metadata...
      Updating pfSense-core repository catalogue...
      Unable to update repository pfSense-core
      Updating pfSense repository catalogue...
      Unable to update repository pfSense

I get exactly the same errors using either "pfSense-upgrade -d" or "pkg update; pkg upgrade pkg" from a shell.

I could download a memstick image from the Portal, but I really don't want to lose my config, like the README states:

      > This will reinstall the factory default image to a replacement hard drive or SSD.
      > This will erase any current configuration.

Even a config backup followed by applying the image then a restore would be a pain, as I still would first have to fix the LAN IP, and I never really trust that everything gets restored correctly when a version change happens in the middle of something like that.

I'd really like to be able to just upgrade the existing install.  Is there any way, like maybe a manual download and install of the new "pkg" package?

You have general connectivity at that point?

That's the output I would expect when there is no WAN connection for example. Or no DNS.

Yep, it turns out the problem was caused by all the DNS server entries config going away for some reason.  It's odd, because some resolution was still working…some IPs on the states table were converted to host names.

All other connectivity seemed to be working fine.  Along with at least some host names in the state table (not everything will reverse), I didn't suspect DNS until I tried a few manual "curl" and "fetch" commands.
