SG-1000 USB console port
-
Hi folks,
I just got one of the new Netgate SG-1000 units and love the unit overall. I've used pfSense in one other environment, but am still somewhat of a novice.
Anyway, I borked up my network access tying to set up VLANs after having already started setup on directly on the LAN port and need to log into the device via serial console. I've tried the console port, which is a microUSB port (per the documentation it's a Silicon Labs CP210x USB to UART Bridge) and I've tried three different pcs - two linux, one FreeBSD - with kernel modules loaded - and I can't even get anything to appear in dmesg when connecting the cable.
I've tried two different microUSB->USB-A cables, so I'm suspecting there might be a hardware fault with the console port. But I wanted to check on here first to see if anyone had any tips for further troubleshooting before requesting service under the warranty.
UPDATE: problem solved. turns out that both cables I tried were charging cables and not data cables. Found a third cable and got the console fired up no problem.
Thanks –- Tim

Nice catch! :)
Not at all obvious I'll have to remember that one. Did you not receive a console cable with the device?
