        You're not missing anything. FreeBSD's Wifi support is second rate at best (used to be better before 802.11n) and you're better off buying a dedicated AP such as one of the cheaper models from Ubiquiti.

          You can still use a consumer router as an access point regardless of what protocol it is. Just disable DHCP on the router and assign it a static IP outside the DHCP rang in your pfSense box and connect a cable to one of the LAN ports.

            Exactly what Asus device are you referring to here?

            Everything I can see that might be an 'AC-1300' is already a router and not pfSense compatible.
