Why won't pfsense 2.3.3 build nonSense out of the box

Why wouldn't one expect the nonSense version to build once checked out of github?
using the sample conf file with nonSense causes the build script to look for non-existing files where pfSense has been changed to nonSense. the pfSense version of the files seem to exist.
and yes, I've seen the snarky comments about trying again and again and reading all of the (obsolete? old versions) in the forums.
I've disable the copyright check just to see if it will build. it doesn't. dies in the ports for some reason.
What is the magic incantation to get nonSense to build?

I think it's fairly obvious that it's broken on purpose and you won't get any assistance from pfSense guys here, whatsoever.
