Is PRIQ suppose to be doing this?

  • Hi everyone,
So over the past week I've been looking at changing my limiter (which was working) to traffic shaper (for priority)… I know I shouldn't fix what ain't broke but I want to learn and explore traffic shaping and also prioritise certain things. I tried to understand HFSC and read many posts but ultimately decided to try PRIQ due to it being simple to setup. To help understand my situation, my Internet speed is 25/5 so I set the LAN Bandwidth to 24Mbps as seen here http://puu.sh/uCwvs/12d937973b.png.  I set the WAN Bandwidth to 4800Kbps as seen here http://puu.sh/uCwvV/fb14086bff.png

My first question is, is this normal?? http://puu.sh/uzgbw/15b4400c9b.png.  I also have noticed my WAN traffic speed to display as being 9Mbps according to the traffic graph which I pressume is normal with it buffering?

My second question, I decided to change the LAN to 1Gbps which seemed to fix the 60Mbps spike but after reading many posts I'm not entirely sure if I should have LAN on 1Gbps or my Internet download speed?

My third question, I've been monitoring the traffic for the past 5 hours and have noticed that qLink's bandwidth is fairly high http://puu.sh/uCwx0/d14c4a03df.png  however, traffic graph shows no LAN devices doing any downloading at that speed http://puu.sh/uCwxN/a12fd3f690.png.

My last question, After seeing qLink saturating my link, I decided to try downloading a test file to see if the higher priority queue would take over the bandwidth, this is what I discovered http://puu.sh/uCwnu/9a0f1be902.png  & http://puu.sh/uCwqA/255c465965.png. Shouldn't qOthersHigh take full bandwidth for being a higher priority queue?

Here are qLink and qOthersHigh settings http://puu.sh/uCwmL/d80458497d.png    http://puu.sh/uCwn5/22305a0fdf.png

Thankyou for reading this fairly long set of questions. I hope I have detailed my situation enough :)

  • QoS only works when you go from fast to slow. Unless you have a 10Gb internet connection, your 1Gb LAN is going to make it not work correctly.

Thanks Harvy66, I've seen some of your responses on other PRIQ posts which have helped me understand a few things on traffic shaping. With what you said, would it be best to have LAN bandwidth set to 24Mbps instead of 1Gbps?  I've seen some conflicting comments on the bandwidth being below Internet speed and some either not set or being higher.
