Ran the update on a backup box with 2.3 RELEASE installed; appeared to succeed.  Anomalies:

      • Dashboard shows 2.3-RELEASE (i386) built on Mon Apr 11 18:12:06 CDT 2016 FreeBSD 10.3-RELEASE-p17 and is Unable to check for updates
      • System -> Update page is "Unable to retrieve system versions."

      Runningpkg info -x pfSenseshows:```
      pfSense-2.3
      pfSense-Status_Monitoring-1.0_1
      pfSense-base-2.3
      pfSense-default-config-2.3
      pfSense-kernel-pfSense-2.3.3_1
      pfSense-pkg-openvpn-client-export-1.3.7_1
      pfSense-rc-2.3
      pfSense-repo-2.3.3
      pfSense-upgrade-0.20
      php56-pfSense-module-0.12

Rebooted with no change.  Assume(!) I'm running 2.3.3_1 as kernel version shows…correct?  Ideas on why I can't get an update status on dashboard or update page?

Have you seen this post https://forum.pfsense.org/index.php?topic=116223.0 that is relevant to the v2.3 pfSense® software.

Perhaps you need to update the version of pkg on your system.

Thank you for the pointer; I ran the package update command and was informed that all packages were up to date.

I believe I have solved my original problem by updating via the console…two iterations were needed but now everything appears correct.
