My pfsense router randomly freezes - I cannot connect to it or the internet, does not respond to DHCP requests etc. I first suspected some kind of crash, but there was absolutely nothing in the router logs. So I connected it to a screen and just pinged some random address. After a few hours, it just froze - no response to keyboard input, nothing unusual on the screen. Again, nothing in the logs. The hardware gets pretty hot, so I registered the temperature with a script, but it never goes beyond 55C, which should be within the CPUs limits. The issue reproduces even after upgrade from 2.2.6 to 2.3.1 then 2.3.3.

I was unable to identify some type of traffic that causes the behavior and I'm not quite sure what can I do to isolate the issue. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

You could back up your config and try a fresh install but honestly this sounds like a hardware issue.
