      Given the fact that 2.4 is dropping support for i386, it looks like I'm going to need to replace my Soekris 6501 at some point. My network is segmented into separate VLANs, and currently I can route on the order of 350 Mbit/sec between them using the Soekris.

      Since the SG-1000 seems to be the new low cost hardware of choice, does anyone have any idea what its performance looks like? If it's about the same speed as the 6501, I'd be fine dropping $150 on it… Otherwise I'd probably need to think about going with something bigger.

        You'll need to be looking at the next step up. The SG1000 will pull 100-150Mbps I understand.

          Hmmm… Good to know. Unfortunate, but good to know.

            @jlauser:

            route on the order of 350 Mbit/sec

            From the pfSense store page:

            • The SG-1000 comes with dual 1Gbps Ethernet ports, enabling maximum throughput exceeding 300Mbps[1].

            • 1. Layer 3 forwarding performance using FreeBSD without a packet filter exceeds 400Mbps. Using pfSense with the default ruleset offers performance exceeding 200Mbps.

            Unfortunately it's looking like you'll need to step it up to the next level.

              Yeah, I noticed that note there after I wrote this post. I'm now convinced that I'll need an SG-2220 for my use case. Slightly harder sell to the wife at twice the price. :P

                Buy her a new notebook and confiscate the old one for pfSense repurpose.
