Hi guys, so I am very new to pfsense and would like some advice on the following subject.

I am from South Africa and the one game I like to play restricts me to my country and I would love to play in European servers are there are a bigger player base.

My question is do I only have to change the DNS on my boks to something in Europe for this to work?

If so where do I change it and is any of the free and public dns services worth it or should I pay for something?

One place I saw with free DNS servers are here https://www.lifewire.com/free-and-public-dns-servers-2626062

Would really appreciate some help on this.

Prob has nothing to do with what dns your query.. But more where the dns query comes from, quite possible they use geo ip database.  And return specific answer based upon where your dns query came from.

Normal way around restrictions based upon your geo location is via vpn.  There are public dns all over the place.

Hey John. How would you suggest I go about setting up a VPN for this? Sorry I know I sound like a tool but I have no idea. Also do I use a free vpn or do I have to buy one?

I don't play games but can imagine that playing any action games over a vpn could be a very painful experience.

Before going down the vpn route, which apart from configuration work will most likely also include a cost, I suggest that you ask in some gaming forums if a vpn is really usable for your specific gaming requirements.

I am not a gamer, so not how it might effect your game play.  But playing on a server half way around the globe is prob going to suck anyway for lag time, etc.  Then throw extra overhead of vpn not going to speed it up for sure.

You might get away with just sending your dns query down the vpn so it looks like your coming from Country/Region X while your really in Y and dns response would give you the answer for region X.

VPN can be done really cheap.. Simple way is cheap low end vps.. I have a few of these in different parts of the world.  1 VPS cost as low as $12 a year, or others I have cost $15 a year, etc.
