Hardware for Pfsense Mini-Itx PC.

  • Hello,

    Good evening everyone,
I would like to help to figure out how many computers can handle, installing pfSense on a PC with the following features:

    Mainboard Asrock Q1900B-ITX Mini ITX
    Intel Quad Core J1900
    4GB DDR3 Ram
    HD 2.5 "Hitachi 500GB 5400 rpm
    Netis AD-1103 PCI-E x1 Gigabit Ethernet 10/100/1000 Mbps

On PfSense you should be activated various services.

    Thanks in advance.

I have no idea what that NIC is or what drivers it uses. It may work fine or it may not work at all or it may work sometimes or with degraded performance. If possible try to replace it with an Intel NIC.

Specifically which "various services" are you planning to use?

What is the speed of the WAN connection?

I would like to support at least 25 to 50 computers.

The services that I would turn are: Captive Portal, Websites Blacklist, Reduce Broadband, DHCP Server, and someone else if possible.

The WAN speeds do not know, it depends on the company on which install the Pfsense Box.

  • c1900 is an older system, and given the number of users; I would go kaby lake pentium/i3/i5 with an itx (matx is preferable for more slots) and intel lan cards

if you go system on a chip, look for something with the new apollo lake celeron j3455; https://www.asus.com/ca-en/Motherboards/J3455M-E/

cheaper to go system on a chip, but more limited

For what he described he doesn't need anything near an i3 even at gigabit speeds. Even the cheapest modern Pentium would be major Overkill for what he described.

The j3355 is your best bet. But do use proper Intel NICs, preferably i340 for power consumption. Used is perfectly fine.

intel lan is a good thing to add
