Pfsense nolonger working right
-
As the subject sates my pfsense is no longer working right. Now I went through the forms a few times and didn’t see anything like my problem so I thought I would just ask. To give some background information my company uses pfsense as our firewall. So far the computer that had pfsense running on it had died 3 times but each time I was able to get everything up and going again just fine. The first time the computer hardware died so I put the hard drive into another computer and got up and going again the second time the hard drive died completely so I just put a new drive in and restored the settings from a backup I had taken.
But the 3rd time is when the real problems started as one day I came in and pfsense was at a screen with just a happy face emoticon in the corner now I tried to reboot it and it would not come up so I was once again was forced to reinstall it and restore from a backup and once again it was working. But then a few days later we had trouble with our internet going down now our ISP sorted that on their end but shortly after that pfsense seemed to just not work at all on the company network no internet nothing. So I dropped in a temp Linksys router to keep the internet up.
Now every time I hook our pfsense box up as the main gateway/fireall it just does not work. You are unable to connect to it nor can you ping it at 192.168.1.1 which is its LAN address. Now I have tried restoring the settings I have even gone as far as to build a new pfsense box using new hardware and restoring using the same backup I used 3 times before that worked with no changes. And I still get the same result I hook it up and you can’t ping it or connect to it or get any internet from it. The only way I can get to it is on one computer I have that has its IP address staticed to it. And even then I have to hook a hub up to it to be able to connect to it. Now the only thing I have not tired is to see if that computer is abled to get internet when it gets hooked up.
But even if it does that does not help me figure out when I hook it up it just does not responded. I would say it was a network issue but seeing as the Linksys router I am using has no issues. And the fact that I have tired restoring the same backup which worked before that now does not. So if anyone has any ideas it would help me out here.

Please tell us the version of pfSense you are using.

Have you tried to configure manually a basic system before you restore the config?
It might be that your config is borked (whyever). -
I am useing Pfsense 1.2 on both of the pfsense boxes I have. Well I did factory reset pfsense and then when I hooked it to the network you could ping it at 192.168.1.1 but when I added the WAN information it seemed to stop again. I will try reseting it again and testing to see at what poist it fails or seemes to stop working. And keep you posted.

Well I have an update with some help I have gotten I was finally able to get my pfsense sense box to be seen on the net work. In the end all it took was a reboot of the network switches and then when I hooked it up to the company network you could ping the pfsense box and access it. Mind you I could not get onto the internet with it. So it's going to take some more playing with it or the internet to get that fixed. But at this point I am just happy that I have alittle bit of process in this area. So if anyone else has this type of problem try rebooting you network switches I just wish I had thought of trying that sooner.

Could it be that your WAN and LAN cards are defined to be on the same subnets what confuses the switches?
