This is just and FYI, in case it helps someone

Upgraded to 2.3.4-RELEASE and the web page became unresponsive but the router was fully functional. Reboot made no difference.

To resolve this pfsense was hit with a factory restore to default settings (over kill I know). After applying the settings manually again the same issue appears. This time I connected to the console and found this message at boot

Welcome to pfSense 2.3.4-RELEASE on the 'pfSense' platform...

      No core dumps found.
      Creating symlinks......ELF ldconfig path: /lib /usr/lib /usr/lib/compat /usr/local/lib /usr/local/lib/ipsec /usr/local/lib/perl5/5.24/mach/CORE
      32-bit compatibility ldconfig path: /usr/lib32
      done.

The message cannot get gid for group 'wheel' appeared when restarting PHP-PFM as well.  After some digging around this appeared in google
      https://redmine.pfsense.org/issues/3635

So the wheel user group was added back in and there have not been any issues since then
