Currently I am running an i3 2100 which does not support AES-NI so I am looking to update my hardware.  With the prevalence of faster internet speeds and my foray into 10G I am looking to bump up my CPU and move to a newer motherboard.  I've been considering an e3-1230 of some sort but I have not found any good deals yet.  I did find an i5-3570k on an ASROCK z77 for a decent price.

Other than losing IPMI and ECC what would be the effect of using the i5 instead of an e3?  Which would you recommend?

      Thanks.

Or you could get an e3 with aes-ni and keep the current hardware. I asume you are using a 1155 server motherboard.

Looking at the chart it seems to me the Processor E3-1220L v2 looks good.  Low power and supports AES. 2 Cores should be plenty pfsense.  Hope it fits your motherboard.

I hadn't considered just replacing the CPU, but I would prefer to upgrade the motherboard as well.  Most of my NICs are currently PCI.  Plus I'm getting a good deal on the i5.

Other than cost, do you think there's a downside to moving to the i5?
