I've dd the embedded image pfSense.img on a CF card and tried to run it..

      the bootloader hangs at

      Loading /boot/defaults/loader.conf
      /

This happens on both my vmware and embedded x86 hardware.

      How do I overcome this?

sorry.. just missed the previous posts that the console is switched to com1.

anyway to let console remain at VGA in embedded setup?
where do I tweak in the build sources?

You have to use a full  install and set it to embedded mode after installation (see http://faq.pfsense.com/index.php?action=artikel&cat=4&id=78&artlang=en&highlight=full%20install  but use the word "embedded" instead of "wrap"; I'll update the faq entry later).
The embedded image has a custom kernel with removed vga and keyboard support, so it's not doable by modding the image.

You need the *.img.gz file. Just write your cfmedia with physdiskwrite.

The LiveCD once booted has an option on the menu to install to HD. What type of embedded system is this. Do you have an IDE port, if so hook up a cdrom drive, install pfsense and change /etc/platform to embedded.
