Even though I'm a noob at this I  finally got the system working and in setting up I have found that I have ( I have  none of the packages that I was needing and saw in many of the videos which is why I went with pfSense)  no packages that can be installed at all. I tried the shell after researching first and tried the code listed but it did not work and got the following…

"unable to update repository pfSense, error updating repositories! Updating PfSense-core repository catalog... Pkg: Repository pfSense-core load error: access repo file (/var/db/pkg/repo-pfSense-core.sqlite) failed: No such file or directory. pkg : https://pkg.pfSense.org/pfsense_v2_3_4_i386-pfsense_2_3_4/meta.txz: No address record...repository has no meta file, using default settings"

and it repeats...  it took a week just to get it to load on the dinosaur I installed it on due to the BIOS and hdd troubles... glad I bought two one as a spare for parts...thanks...
