Port forwarding Plex Media correctly on different subnets.

  • Hello All,

I'm unable to connect to my plex server (10.20.1.99) from my roku (10.20.2.5) device.  I don't know what is wrong - my port forwarding or firewall rules.

I browsed around quite a bit but all setups are usually done on the same subnets or trying to access from outside of network.  I want to access within my (home) network only - no outside access.

My question is, if I need to create a firewall rule, which interface (WAN, LAN, WIFI) do i need to add to?  Currently, it's only on the WAN.

Is my port forwarding rule correct or do I need to change it?

Your input would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you

  • I had issues with the Plex Media Server as well.  The client and server were on different subnets that were connected over IPsec.  The issue was that the Plex Media Server itself did not like the fact that I was on a different network, even though devices were able to talk to each other on both lans.  My guess is that the Plex server has it's own internal network rules.

The above link has something about hidden server settings to allow other networks.  I have not tried this myself but maybe it's relevant to you.

  • Thanks Ace, never knew about these settings.

I added 'allowedNetworks' to the xml file to include all of the subnets and boom!!!  Connected….
