Serial: ����������

Hi folks.
After a power cycle the other day, a firewall at one of our branch offices (a SG-2440) started displaying the "Serial: ����������" on the dashboard. I don't know what the serial# really is/was (any way to derive it from the 4b5d6d9e85f04b9f1816 Netgate ID?) but I tried using nvram commands to set it to e.g. 1234567890 and that worked temporarily - at least until a reboot. Now it's back to question marks diamonds again. Any idea how to fix this permanently?
