When i ping host rather than host.local.domain it just fails. Is it possible to force pfsense to assume local.domain before giving up? I'd like to do it in the dns resolver and not using "Domain search list" since i am using windows clients.

doesn't work that way.  Your client should add the domain you want to search if all you want to do is put in a hostname.
