I was running Pfsense 2.2.6 for some time now on an old Dell Inspiron 2200.  No issues.  I decided to upgrade to 2.3.4 and after the system upgraded and rebooted, the boot process hangs at:
      ata0: <ata channel="">at channel 0 on atapci0

Nothing beyond that no matter how long I wait.  I've tried also installing fresh and exact same thing happens.  Downgrading to 2.2.6 works fine still though.

      Any ideas?</ata>

Have you tried a 2.4 snapshot?

unfortunately that won't work.  The laptop is only 32bit.

Well, not much more to do then. It's a ~12 year old laptop. Maybe try a verbose boot of 2.3 and see if you see anything more, but it sounds like recent versions of FreeBSD do not like that hardware. 2.2.x is based on a much older version of FreeBSD.
