Are there an alternative strategies to identifying if a WAN interface (such as a OpenVPN interface) is down if the gateway for that interface is not pingable?  Private Internet Access is known for doing this, so pfsense assumes that the gateway is always up.  I'd like to be able to restart the OpenVPN service when the connection is down.

    Thanks.

I'm not aware of anything other than dpinger, but you can specify the IP that it pings to check connectivity.  While generally pinging the gateway makes the most sense, if it's not reliable you can use something else.  For example, you could ping one of Google's DNS servers live 8.8.8.8.
