WAN interface obtains gateway from OPT if OPT plugged in first

  • I am running pfSense embedded 1.2.

I have two WAN interfaces: one PPPoe interface on a DSL modem setup on WAN (vr1). The second is a cable modem setup on OPT (vr2). They are provided by two different ISPs, and each ISP has its own gateway IP.

However, if the PPPoe interface on WAN (vr1) drops for some reason (e.g. the modem is restarted), when it comes back up pfsense assigns the gateway from OPT (vr2) to the WAN interface. This obviously does not work. Disconnect/reconnect has no effect – the gateway from OPT is always assigned to WAN.

In order to recover from this situation, I need to unplug the OPT interface from the router, reboot the router so that WAN starts up ok and has the correct gateway address assigned, and then plug in OPT again, and IP renew to get that interface working again.

Is this a known bug? If not, is there some other relevant information that I should collect before creating a bug report? Looking through the changelog I do see some fixes in the 1.2.1 RC that may fix this, but I'm not certain...

  • I have the same type of issue in 1.2.3-RC2 (built on Sun Jun 28 06:05:16 EDT 2009 ).

Problem doesn't seem to be EVERY time that the PPPoE connection drops, but my PPPoE connection is quite poor and drops several times a day (yay, Qwest!), and the aforementioned problem (the OPT1 gateway gets assigned as the WAN gateway) occurs a few times a week.

Unlike the previous post, I can resove this with just a reboot of pfSense.  I don't need to disconnect the OPT1 interface.

I'll try a more recent build, etc.  The PPPoE is primarly a backup connection, so for me personally it's low impact.  Just curious if anyone else has observed this as well.

    Thanks!

  • Brian,
Thank you.  I've sent you an email.  I'm currently having two problems causing a cascading problem.  There does seem to be an issue with PF sense assigning the gateway address from interface A as the gateway on interface B.  I don't believe that I was having this problem in 1.2.1 Release, so hey, I live with the fact that I'm running a beta build.

The second is that I have poor uptime on my DSL connection.
