2.4.x installation media for CF card on APU1

  • Hi Folks,
From https://sgpfiles.pfsense.org/mirror/downloads/, what is the correct installation media to use now in 2.4.x for writing directly to a CF card being used in an APU1?

Previously I would have used something like pfSense-CE-2.3.4-RELEASE-4g-amd64-nanobsd.img, but the memstick and iso images now all appear to be 'real' installers.
    Am I missing something here?

NanoBSD is gone with 2.4. You will need to use serial memstick installer however I'm not sure how well CF will take the full pfSense installation.

  • Yeah, I think that's part of the problem. With the serial memstick installer is it possible to install onto the same CF card.
ie. write pfSense-CE-memstick-2.4.1-RELEASE-amd64.img onto the card, boot it and then install in-place onto the same card?
The old NanoBSD were all images rather than installers.

Yes, you can't flash the installer on CF card. You need to boot the installer from USB and then can install it to it. However, I wouldn't not install it to CF as it might kill it over time. Instead, I would look for cheap 8-16GB mSATA SSD's. They're pretty affordable these days, from $10 to $20.
