Upgrade to 2.4.1 seemed to work okay. But when I want to install the acme package using System>Package Manager I get the following error:

WARNING: Current pkg repository has a new OS major version.
pfSense should be upgraded before doing any other
              operation
      Failed

When I check my FreeBSD version with uname -mrs I get

      FreeBSD 10.1-RELEASE-p24 amd64

Should I upgrade my FreeBSD version? And what's the best way to do this?

        No, it's not.
2.4.x is based on FreeBSD 11, so your install possibly broken and it is better to do clean install just save your configuration and restore it after.

Okay, thanks for the answer. Is there a manual doing a clean install on FreeBSD 10.1, which pfsense version should I use then?

After reading the installation guide at https://doc.pfsense.org/index.php/Installing_pfSense#Choose_Installation_Type I see that there's a lot of (dangerous) steps to be taken. Can't I just fix the existing installation?
