Issue printing from devices on different vlans than printer

  • I have a problem, and hoping to find an answer:

I have a printer  that is attached to my nas on my main lan (vlan1).
I also have a vlan for my wireless laptops (vlan 13).

Created the GW, and (for now) a rule allowing all ip4 tcp and udp traffic between the internal subnets

I can access the webgui on the nas from a laptop connected to vlan 13 (and also when connected to vlan 1) by its ip adress and its hostname for both http and https.
http(s):// <nas ip="">Printing a document when connected to vlan1 is no problem, working fine.

However when I trie to print when connected to vlan 13 (or any of the other subnets/vlans I have), nothing is coming from the printer.
There is no error on the laptop when hitting the print button, and in the pfsense logging I see nothing about blocked actions.

the pinter is addressed as: http://<nas ip="">:631/printers/usb-printer

Any thoughts where to look to troubleshoot/solve this issue?</nas></nas>

  • thnx for the reply.

I did setup the printer like this on my windows 10 laptop, and indeed it is working fine …. when I am on the same subnet/vlan
When I am on the other subnet/vlan I am not able to print anything.

since I have "allow all ip4 tcp and udp traffic" rules between the subnets and am able with the same laptop when on the other subnet to make a http(s) connection to port 80/443 of the nas where the printer is attached to, I concluded there has to be a known route from the one subnet to the other.
firewall logs do not mention anything for source and destination ip, filtering for destination port 631 also showed no log entries.
I have no clue where to look for the issue anymore.

laptop 192.168.1.100 -> printerdriver 192.168.1.200:631 is printing fine
laptop 192.168.1.100 -> http gui 192.168.1.200:80 is working fine
laptop 192.168.1.100 -> https gui 192.168.1.200:443 is working fine

laptop 192.168.5.100 -> printerdriver 192.168.1.200:631 not printing anything
laptop 192.168.5.100 -> http gui 192.168.1.200:80 is working fine
laptop 192.168.5.100 -> https gui 192.168.1.200:443 is working fine

I see from your other thread working fine now after you reinstalled the driver.

that was tagit446 that solved his problem, I was nicely asked there to create my own topic :)
(will try tomorrow anyway of reinstalling the driver wile on the other subnet makes a difference)
