      Hey all,

I've been just following this guide:

      https://nguvu.org/pfsense/pfsense-inbound_vpn/

..on setting up a vpn server into my home network.

I'm a little confused about the hostname section, where is this established? Is this something that is set through the pfsense wizard? Does it then update with dns-omatic/opendns account? Do I set it in my opendns account? Or do I need to use a service like dyndns/no-ip… really confused.

EDIT: or do I need to purchase a whole other domain name for the purpose of forwarding traffic to my home network?

      Thanks in advance!!

SOLVED: opendns do not provide hostname, as noted in this thread

      https://support.opendns.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/220035187-what-is-my-fqdn-

… to access my home network, I am fairly certain that I add the name of the network I initialised in my opendns dashboard i.e. home

From there, and I haven't tested this yet, I think I need to access the home network by entering home.<domain of="" my="" email="" username="">.com ... we shall see</domain>

On the Client set up there is "Server host or address"

That is the location where you enter the "Server" side.  Either DNS name or via IP address.

You can use a service like NoIP.com or some others that provide a dynamically updated DNS service for free for non commercial use.

pfSense has a Dynamic DNS updater built in.

@chpalmer, thank you for the response. My apologies, I should clarify.

I have my opendns account setup and I have all my credentials, of that account, entered into the pfsense wizard.

My confusion arises with setting the hostname on the wizard, this is the url I want to enter to access my home network.

Is this something that is simply set in the wizard and the opendns will update the ip with that url? Does opendns handle that? I am using a variant of a domain name that I already own, will that work? Or do I need to create another hostname for login?

Ah!    You can use your DNS to reach anything you have setup on your network as long as you allow it in the firewall settings.    DNS is simply a name resolution to an IP address.  Use if for anything you need.
