I have exported the configuration from our current router which is and old machine with VIA Esther processor at 1000MHz running pfSense 2.1.5. I got a brand new SG-4860 1U and updated it to 2.4.2. After restoring the xml file and rebooting, the new device gets stuck at "Press F12 for boot menu.". At this point my only option is to reinstall pfSense from a USB flash drive. I reinstalled, restored the xml again. This time I fixed/assigned all Ethernet adapters since their names don't match between both devices. I rebooted and got the same result. I reinstalled again, fixed the interface names in the xml and imported the new xml file -> still does not boot.

      Any ideas?

      Thank you!

Your existing configuration is probably changing to an unsupported console type (VGA?) at that point.

When you install the image and reboot it boots fine until you restore the old config, right?

What image file are you using to install?

Should be able to get around that with something at the F12 prompt but I'll have to do some digging.

Yes, the existing/old router uses VGA.

Correct! I reinstalled multiple times without any issues. Right now I am sitting on a freshly installed 2.4.2.

          pfSense-CE-memstick-ADI-2.4.2-RELEASE-amd64.img

I don't see anything VGA/serial related in the xml file. The config file should not care… I think.

Just install the package. Sorry. Tied up at a trade show this week.

You were right about the VGA/serial output. The serial port was not enabled on our old pfsense hardware. I enabled it, exported the xml and imported it into the new hardware. It now reboots just fine.

And I installed the factory image!

                Thank you very much!
