      I know this has nothing to do with pfSense, but what I'm currently experiencing is beyond belief.  I'm staying in a Travelodge Hotel, in Ottawa, Ontario.  One thing I noticed was how bad the Wifi service is.  While the bandwidth is a tolerable 1 - 2 Mb, the connection was dropping frequently.  This morning I fired up Wireshark and saw 2 bizarre things.  The first, less critical, was a 5 minute DHCP lease time.  But much worse, renewals are being NAK'd.  So, every 5 minutes, my connection has to restart from discovery, with a 0.0.0.0 source address, get the 5 minute lease and then have to start again 5 minutes later.  Someone is clearly incompetent!

      If renewal worked, I could live with a 5 minute lease.  If the lease time was a more reasonable few hours, I could live without the renewals, but having both issues means extremely poor service.

      BTW, the company responsible for this mess is called Liveport.  I'm going to give them a piece of my mind.

      I haven't lost my mind. It's around here...somewhere...

        A short lease time with no renewal normally points to some sort of auth method where you get a temp lease and then get pushed to a different vlan for access.

        1-2mb - why not just use your cell data plan if bandwidth is so low.. 4G/LTE is WAY faster.. Shoot even 3G, edge even should be stable verse what seems like the mess they have.

              @JKnott:

              I know this has nothing to do with pfSense, but ….

              The first time I found "pfSense" (2005 ?) I thought it was made express for 'me' running a hotel and seeking for a way to offer my clients an "Internet connection" using some APs.
              Since day 1 I wasn't looking for selling this access (a simple ADSL land line with appr. 20 Mb/sec costs 40 € a month here), as I wasn't selling hot water or TV access neither. The rest of the world, other hotel owners, etc said : "no way, this means a 4 digit € investment a year, so you have to ask money for it". I persisted.
              Today, most if not all Internet access in hotels is free now, and most hotels still pay so they can "offer" it.
              Hotel owners should use (thus test) their own services more often.

              @JKnott  : I guess the food was excellent then ;)

              Btw : I have a triple 4G/3G (3 operators !) antenna forest nearby.  If someone show me how to draw more the 5 Mb/sec from them I'll pay his stay  ;) The french campaign, in the inner lands isn't the same as …  Paris. ( ... and in 2026 we will have that fiber connection ! - end of 2018 and Orange (huge French/European ISP) will go IPv6 ! )

              No "help me" PM's please. Use the forum, the community will thank you.
              Edit : and where are the logs ??

                Can you please elaborate about operators antenna? I'm interested to learn why you cannot achieve speeds higher than 5MBps.

                  I used the password they gave me and that gives access to the Internet, without any other authentication.  As for cell phone, I have only 6 GB on my plan, and I also forgot to bring it on this trip.

                  Apparently, I am not the only one having Wifi issues.

                    I'm not on Twitter.  I sent an email this morning and a copy to Travelodge.

                      Here's the capture file, for anyone who's interested.

                        @JKnott:

                        Here's the capture file, for anyone who's interested.

                        Take a look at how the DHCP server address keeps changing.  In this capture I see:
                        10.217.176.1
                        10.217.16.1
                        10.189.104.1
                        10.215.208.1

                        The requests are being NAK'd for having the wrong network address, but has the the wrong adddress because that's what it was previously assigned!

                        UNBELIEVEABLE!!!

                        No wonder this connection is so screwed up!  With a /22 subnet mask, it's being told to use a DHCP server that's on a different subnet.

                        BTW, this happens with both Linux & Windows.  My Android tablet also has problems with this.
