Well it looks like I’m running into the same problem above about uefi. If I put installer onto cf it boots fine. If I put the installer on ssd with an external enclosure and Rufus and boot from there I get a kernel error. I get same error once I get pfSense installed on ssd from cf and it tries to boot.
-
Can we see the exact error you're getting?
Did you try installing as ZFS and selecting the UEFI or UEFI+BIOS partition scheme?

I did. Let me try to get it booted back up and I will get an image up.
-
well weirdly enough I put a different sata cable in with the ssd this morning and did a reinstall and it booted up just fine. I'm not sure if this cable will allow the lid to close as its a straight in plug and not a 90 degree elbow.
-
Ah. Yeah bad SATA connection can be really weird. You'd assume it would either work or not but....

Especially since that same cable was put back into my xtm5 so that i could have an internet connection and it worked just fine....live and learn.
Does WGXepc64 work on this box? I know its petty but I would like the Arm/Disarm light to turn green once pfsense has booted fully.
-
It does.
-
Hi all. Box works fine, with the 4370T in, it keeps the temp around 28 degrees.
I bought an HDD caddy for a few euro, https://www.ebay.de/itm/2Slot-2-5-to-3-5-HDD-Bay-Tray-Mount-Adapter-Caddy-HDD-Bracket-Holder/372255157574?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649
Just need to drill 2 holes to correctly mount it in the existing holes in the m400/m500 and saw off 1 part of the caddy(fits 2 ssd 2.5", and only on 1 side the extender to 3.5" needs to be sawed away).
It fits nicely just behind the psu. -
Please take photos and notes of the fitting process and end result. Sounds like something I need to tackle for a “finished look.”

I recently found my m400 has issues doing reboots. It seems to hang at the end of the shutdown and never actually restarts. It can perform a halt correctly just not a reboot. Anyone else have this issue?
-
Nope. Tweaked BIOS settings here though. Pretty sure I didn't change anything power related.

It seems to be an issue since switching to ssd as it didn’t have the issue when loaded to a CF card. I may pull it down this weekend and attempt to reload it.

@ijay-xtm5
Are there instructions for building and connecting a VGA connector for the M400 -
The pin-out of the VGA header is shown in the FW-7585 user manual. I just used some old front panel header connectors and VGA extension with the wires shoved in. Of course the screen will not look pretty! But you can see the output enough for CLI.

@stephenw10 Do you have any pics?

It was something like this:
and this:
However it's hard to recommend you do that for obvious reasons! (it does work though)
As mentioned elsewhere the VGA header is 2mm pitch not the more common 0.1" but for single connections like that it will fit.

Not sure if I'm that ambitious with the wiring... It does remind me of college. On a separate project, I've trying to find a way to reduce the jet engine noise coming from the 3 Sunon fans (1 in power supply and 2 cooling ram and CPU). I purchased (3) Noctua NF-A4x20 PWM Premium-Quality Quiet 40mm Fans ( with Pocaton 5Pin Female to 4Pin Male Socket Connector Jack PWM Cooling Fan Power Cable for DELL PC). Not sure they will keep my i3-4130 and 8gb of ram cool. Thoughts? Suggestions? Even considering Acoutipack

It actually runs surprisingly quietly if you turn down the fan minimum speed to a rational level. Of course that's not easy because you can't access the BIOS to make that change. You can edit the BIOS defaults and re-upload it which is what I did but that's not without risk. It does mean you can enable speedstep etc at the same time though which that CPU does support.
It's probably possible to setup the fan controller in software as we did for other models in WGXepc. If I even find any free time I'll try to check it.Steve
