Version 2.2.2 came as a live CD that you did not have to install, no HDD needed. Does the same exist for the latest version? Or how can a live CD be created from the current version, ideally after installation and configuration?

No. LiveCD has been discontinued. Install to a disk (or even to another USB thumb drive) and run it that way.
